独立写作话题:

Do you agree or disagree with the statement:

When you have a friend for a long time, whether you will continue the friendship even he or she does something you do not like.

话题分析:“1-2” → 1’end the friendship2continue the friendship

(让步)1.’不能忍:触及原则问题,则果断分 →  philosophy/ground rule

How will you choose between to continue or to terminate a long-term friendship after a friend has done something that you do not like? While some people would prefer to end this friendship to prevent further hurt between them, personally speaking, however, I consider that continuing this long-term friendship is of greater value.

Admittedly, everyone has his/her ground rules with respect to work, life and values. To be more specific, it is basically impossible for a friendship to continue when one friend cross the bottom line of the other. For example, the philosophy between a reliable friendship is mutual trust and honesty, which provides us with emotional security to share our private feelings and personal secrets with our intimate friends. However, when the trusted friends usually disclose our secrets to others and even gossip about these private secrets, this deed, whether occasionally or not, will fundamentally undermine the relationship between friends and results in mistrust between them. Gradually, with mutual trust and honesty collapsing, so will the friendship itself.

However, if what the friend does is irrelevant with our principles or bottom lines in life and work, it is unlikely that people will choose to end a long-term friendship. In fact, people are not supposed to judge others. In other words, on the condition that the person’s deeds does not hurt his/her friend, there is no sufficient reason to justify the ending of their friendship. For example, I tend to appreciate morning persons similar to me, while my friend recently tends to sleep and get up late. However, it would be ridiculous for me to abandon this long-term friendship with him/her only because of this minor divergence in living habit. Therefore, as is often the case, people generally would continue their long-term friendship despite of their disagreement on minor decisions.

In addition, it is essential for friends to be considerate to each other. That is to say, people should try to think more from the perspective of their friends than their own, understand the specific situations of their friends and forgive them for the intentions of their deeds. Typically, my friend Vicky told me her appreciation towards my dress at my birthday party, which was actually a lie and the dress turned out ugly. While I was angry at her, I realized that she told me that while lie, aiming to protecting my feelings from getting hurt on my big day. Basically, this dishonesty, which I despise in principle, represents her sincere concern for my emotional well-being. Consequently, I understood her good intention and forgave her for her deed, continuing and even furthering our friendship thanks to this “party dress” event.

Judging from the analysis above, while our friends sometimes do things we dislike, it is irrational for us to terminate our long-term friendship without careful consideration. As long as their deeds do not undermine our own principles, it is our responsibility as a sincere friend to understand our friends and thus continue our long-term friendship.
